How do i stop X from starting up every time i reboot my machine? it's surely not as simple as removing the 'S99gdm' script from '/etc/rc3.d'.....

is gdm just the login display manager then? otherwise, when i uninstall it, i won't be able to start x at all... right? |

Even better practice is to rename the symlink to K<whatever> instead of S<whatever> Init works roughly like this when changing runlevels
so just deleting the S script doesn't guarantee that gdm gets stopped. |

...just found out the official "debian" way of doing this is to take the
line out of /etc/X11/default-display-manager ... in other words make it empty |
